Self Portrait as Saint with Sean O’Pry by Michael Zavros

Beauty, Fashion & Luxury

When I see Sean O’Pry, Versace and Michael Zavros together, I want to know more. You may remember my interview with artist, Michael Zavros, from a while back (read here). Michael is an amazing artist, alongside being a man of class and style. A gentleman who creates luxurious artworks that blow your mind every time you see them. His attention to detail and ability to make you feel such emotion when you are viewing his works is simply wonderful. Sean O’Pry was featured in my Top 5 Male Models story and a model that I have been showing on The Man Has Style since the beginning. Of course, I have also shown Versace throughout the past few years here, how could I not?

So, when I learned that Michael Zavros was working with Sean O’Pry on his new collection of artworks, and Versace was in there also, I was so thrilled. The end result is spectacular, the images are amazing! Once I had seen them, I had to contact Michael to find out more and share with the readers of The Man Has Style.

TMHS: Sean O’Pry, Versace and Michael Zavros is a wonderful combination and one I had to know more about. How did this all come about and what was your inspiration behind this?

MZ: I’ve long held an interest in beauty, fashion and luxury and also in how life and art intersect. I met O’Pry in Los Angeles en route to New York from Milan quite serendipitously after actively seeking the model for some three months whilst in resident in the Australia Council Greene Street studio in Soho.

O’Pry is highly sough after for print and catwalk. At the time, he was the star of Taylor Swift’s current film clip, Blank Space. His beauty has become iconic and bankable – he is the patron saint of contemporary culture’s obsession with youth and beauty. In my photographer, Self Portrait as Saint with Sean O’Pry/Versace, O’Pry holds aloft his own makeshift halo, a gilded Versace plate, while he is formally beatified by the adoring gaze of the viewer. Discus Thrower with Sean O’Pry/Versace references art history, specifically the original Classical Greek sculpture held by the British Museum (discobulus), making analogies between O’Pry and the sacred Greek concept of perfect Hellenic proportions.

In Self Portrait with Sean O’Pry, the model wears a t-shirt with a hand drawn logo. O’Pry adopts a classic model pose of casual insouciance as he endorses the brand on the t-shirt (Zavros). He, and we, are in collusion; the consumed and the consumer. But what exactly is for sale? Is this an advertisement or a self-portrait, in which O’Pry is my avatar? Perhaps both. My work explores narcissism. O’Pry is the embodiment of a projected perfection.

TMHS: Your paintings often look like photographs with so much detail and you have the ability to bring an artwork to life. Saying this, there has been much talk of whether these particular works are paintings or photographs, can you clear up for those who don’t know?

MZ: The works in question are photographs, although I anticipate they may form part of a larger project with Sean. I enjoy the connection between painting and photography, both mimicking and extending each other. Importantly, the photographs of Sean referenced classical painting and portraiture.

TMHS: You are on the cover of two art publications; Art Collector and Australia Art Monthly. How does it feel being on both of these around the same time?

MZ: It’s exciting to see the new work embraced in a critical way via a medium I’m less know for. The project with Sean marks quite a shift in my practice in so many ways.

TMHS: Any exhibitions or other events you would like to share where people can see your works?

MZ: My work will be included in GOMAQ at Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) next month, following this, a group exhibition with my Auckland gallery, Stark White at Sydney Contemporary in September, and then the Adelaide Biennale at Art Gallery of South Australia next Feburary.

TMHS: Where can readers of The Man Has Style purchase your artwork?

MZ: Currently, I’m represented in Australia by Philip Bacon Galleries, Brisbane and in New Zealand with Starkwhite, Auckland.

The One to Watch

It was just over one year ago I was telling everyone about this new model in Sydney I thought was going to go places and he was one to watch (read more here). Tom Farrelly has turned out to be exactly that. I met Tom through him working in PR and saw him venture into modelling early last year. It’s been quite lovely seeing the development and different projects he has worked on. The beauty with Tom (aside from the obvious) is he is a pleasure to work with and a genuinely wonderful man. His Instagram followers will agree, with the amount of followers growing quite quickly. He loves a bit of humour and loves to interact with his followers. Picked up by Kult in Germany and recently moving across to Priscillas here in Australia, Tom is making people notice. I had a chat to Tom to find out more.

TMHS: “You have your own blog now, Being Tom Farrelly (www.beingtomfarrelly.com). Congratulations! I was hoping you would start one, so it’s great to see. What are the plans for this? How has it been received?”

TF: “Thanks! It’s exciting to have another platform to share what I do with everyone. Right now I’m sticking to lifestyle and fashion, but eventually I would like to expand into filming videos and actually doing some singing and doing some remakes of songs I like! People seem to enjoy what I have to say so far which is nice.”

TMHS: “You were picked up by Kult in Germany and spent some time over there. What is your connection with Germany and what were some of the projects you worked on there?”

TF: “Getting signed to Kult is one of the most exciting things that has ever happened to me, they are the most amazing bunch of people and they really feel like a family now. I actually lived in Germany for 6 months after school on my gap year so it was great to get back there! I shot all over the place, in Berlin, Hamburg, Nürnberg, Munich, Oslo, Barcelona, Bordeaux. Just crazy!!! Bordeaux was shot a few days before I came back to Sydney and it was my second cover (for German magazine Free Men’s World) – we shot outside of the city near the Cap Ferret and after we had a massive seafood feast.”

TMHS: Alongside Kult in Germany, you are now with Priscilla’s in Australia and in some great company there too! How long have you been with them and have you worked on any projects through them?

TF: “I have just signed with them and have already worked on a bunch of great things! The men’s team are just fantastic and very professional! I am so excited to be part of the Priscillas family going forward.”

TMHS: “Your Instagram following seems to be growing quite quickly. I always love your Instagram not just for the photos but also you are quite interactive with your followers. How has Instagram helped you with your modelling? What do you love about Instagram?”

TF: “I actually love the direct interaction with followers! It’s nice making people laugh or just brightening their day a little. It can get a little bit serious – all pouting Kardashians and paid endorsements – but I try to keep it light hearted and fun by making fun of myself. Instagram can help with modelling, the photographer who shot the campaign I was originally sent to Germany for had found me on Instagram a month before and wanted to shoot with me, so when she saw my card with Kult she knew who I was and asked to book me!”

TMHS: “You were recently mentioned by British GQ. Tell me more about this.”

TF: “That was a crazy moment! I had no idea about it for two days then a friend of mine in LA who was also featured on the list (and is SO stylish) sent me a message asking if I had seen it. It was British GQ’s list for Top 50 Most Stylish Men on Instagram, so cool to be mentioned by GQ, let alone British one as I have lived in London and would love to go back – it’s a great city!”

Tom Farrelly & David Jones

6 Aug

It was such a delight to see Sydney model Tom Farrelly working with David Jones, following in the footsteps of his father who modelled for them when he was younger.  See more in the video above.  I featured Tom in a story earlier in the year “Model to Watch: Tom Farrelly” and predicted he was going to make people take notice.  And that he has! He has gone to Miami for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim and worked with brands such as M.J. Bale as well as the recent addition of David Jones.  Not bad for someone who only recently started modelling.  For more images, see Tom’s Instagram (@beingtomfarrelly) and keep an eye on The Man Has Style in coming months.

Every day I see so many images and amazing models as part of my work on The Man Has Style. I’m always looking out for fresh faces and the men that look like they can do great things with campaigns, especially those that align with what I do here.  Sydney based model, Tom Farrelly is one such man who fits this well.  After being in contact with Tom since last year, it was great news to learn he had ventured into the world of modelling.  I love his look.  I’m sure you will be seeing more of Tom in campaigns going forward, I know I’ll be keeping a close watch on what he is doing.
