Country Road High Summer 2015

While many readers of The Man Has Style are moving toward the cooler months of the year, here in Australia we are moving toward summer. Today it’s hot outside, and the Country Road High Summer 2015 shoot reminded me of how lovely it is to relax and enjoy the warmer weather. The simplicity of the collection is quite appealing. I’m quite fond of the authentic hand-made espadrilles, easily working in with the worn in raffia trilby. The silhouettes of the individual pieces of clothing are simple with beautiful texture. It all oozes relaxed, carefree and simply peaceful.

Sophie Holt, Managing Director at Country Road shares her thoughts –  “The summer wardrobe essential piece is definitely the linen shirt – have a couple in rotation — this season’s colours are inky blue and khaki green. With the sleeves rolled up loosely and slightly undone, it’s a relaxed look that works so well with a printed board short in the day or a simple navy deck short for summer nights.”

Check out the full range at the Country Road.

Burberry Strait-Laced

Burberry 'Strait-Laced' Spring Summer 2016

Burberry ‘Strait-Laced’ Spring Summer 2016

The Experience of Burberry

When a fashion show is not just about showing the clothes but in an overall experience, encompassing sight, sound, smell and taste, the memory can stay with you for a lifetime. Burberry have the ability to create an experience that you won’t forget. From the hand-delivered invitations, so beautiful in design and quality, to the email from Christopher Bailey a few hours before the show, every detail was thought of before, during and after the show, in what I like to refer to as “The Experience of Burberry”.

A live performance by British musician Rhodes, playing “Vienna”, “Breathe”, “Close Your Eyes” and “I Put A Spell On You”, accompanied by a 24-piece orchestra conducted by Joe Duddell, was exquisite, with arrangements created exclusively for the show. In previous seasons, I had covered the show from Australia and been moved to tears at the beauty from simply watching online. The live music would give me that extra something that resonated with my romantic mind. With this season my first Burberry show where I was able to be there in person, I was more than a little excited to be attending. When the performance is so powerful musically and you are combining it with an amazing setting alongside a beautiful collection, your experience is taken to a level you can’t even imagine.

Set in a custom-built venue in London’s Kensington Gardens, we were surrounded by wild English flowerbeds filled with seasonal buds such as foxgloves and hazel, making it feel like the most wonderful garden party. There was live music and a feeling of anticipation in the air for what we were all about to see. The sun was shining and the sky was blue. Everyone was dressed beautifully and everywhere you looked, you could see happiness and bright eyes. I wanted to live my life in this setting!

Burberry 'Strait-Laced' Spring Summer 2016

Look #6: A slim fit caban in a super-lightweight wool-silk blend. Made in Italy, the fabric is specially treated with a water-repellent coating. An understated design with clean welt pockets and button-tab cuffs.

We were ushered into the space where we were to see the show, with bird sounds filling the air and the plush carpet under foot, further adding to the luxurious feel. The much admired front row guests were arriving with Samuel L. Jackson, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sam Claflin, John Boyega, Josh Whitehouse (who I picked as one of my best dressed for the day), Hu Bing, David Gandy, Masahiro Motoki, Tinie Tempah, Mario Testino and Lewis Hamilton, amongst many others there.

The music began and we were treated to a beautiful performance and showing of the collection. The colour palette was stunning. Black, navy, charcoal, pale grey, brown, stone and white were prominent with accents of turquoise, red and mustard. The cloth was luxurious and exquisite, with the cotton lace a highlight across the collection. English wool/mohair tailoring cloth, wool/silk tailoring cloth, fine cotton tailoring cloth, Burberry gabardine, double-faced cashmere and knitted cashmere were shown in different looks.

A new tailored slim fit designed, called The Chelsea, was introduced in trench coats and suiting. Lace shirts, double-faced cashmere topcoats, cashmere knitted joggers, lightweight down jackets, and light wool/silk trench coats were filling my vision, and my mind was delighted. Combined with the beautiful colour palette, I at times felt overwhelmed by what I was seeing.

I’ve been working almost daily with eyewear over the past year and I thought the square tortoiseshell sunglasses were a wonderful preview of the eyewear collection for Spring Summer 2016. The ochre tortoiseshell flush acetate front and uniform thick temples looked magical with black lenses, with the traditional double pin hinges visible on the front and temples and a polished metallic Burberry logo on the temples. The strong look worked well with the more feminine feel of the lace. The balance was just right. Another wonderful detail featured were the bug tie pins. How I loved these!

The graphic print silk wool trench coat from the Burberry 'Strait-Laced' Spring Summer 2016 collection is one of my favourite pieces.

One of my favourite pieces from the collection is the graphic print trench coat. I love this! What a wonderful trench coat. The artwork is hand-painted in the Burberry studio and silk-screen printed onto the crisp and lightweight silk-wool blend fabric. Crafted in Italy, the design is cut for a streamlined fit. The flow of the fabric was simply beautiful as the model walked and at the turn the trench coat almost went into slow motion, as if to emphasise the perfection of the design, as it flared out at the hem. Combined with the lace detail underneath, it is a standout. This overall look is a delight, I had goosebumps when I saw it.

The show finishing was not the end of the experience. We were served summer cocktails and champagne from Thomas’s – Burberry’s new all-day café within its Regent Street flagship – whilst British musicians Keston Cobblers Club, played live on the lawn. It really was a delight! Everyone was talking of how wonderful the show was and the beautiful afternoon we were having.

If you are like me, you see something you like and want it as soon as you can. For those who cannot wait and want looks from the runway now, you can pre-order selected coats and accessories until 22 June and will receive them two months earlier than everyone else. The items can be personalised with a metal nameplate which makes each piece even more special. If you are looking for the sunglasses, they will be available from February 2016 globally. If only I could get my hands on one of those exquisite bug tie pins before then!

Keep an eye on The Man Has Style on Instagram as more photos are to follow from the afternoon. In the meantime, make sure you watch the full show (Burberry Spring Summer 2016 ‘Strait-Laced’).

‘The Experience of Burberry’ was spectacular. Thank you Burberry for inviting me to share this. It was a pleasure.

Beckham by Belstaff

The Experience at Belstaff House

David Beckham’s passion for vintage, classic styling is further explored with his second capsule for the Beckham for Belstaff collection. I had the pleasure of viewing the range this week at Belstaff House in New Bond Street, the location an experience itself. Everything about Belstaff House is impeccable. Beautiful architecture and from the street it is so powerful and engaging. The interior makes you feel at home, a grand home it would be too with furnishing and fittings that are worthy of a story on their own, but home all the same. References to times past are everywhere and there are numerous motorcycles to admire. Those working in the store make you feel welcome from the moment you arrive and the service is outstanding. I was ready to move in!

Now I move to the capsule, which has been described as pervasive moto pieces joined by an aviation inspired thread. Overall, there are five looks that have been put together to represent the capsule. Each look is strong with a jacket the main feature. The quality of each piece is exceptional. Every detail has been carefully considered and along with the strong visual design elements, the function and practicality of each garment everything even more appealing.

Beckham by Belstaff Look 1: Ryde Jacket, Lowry Shirt, Harpton Denim

Beckham by Belstaff Look 1: Ryde Jacket, Lowry Shirt, Harpton Denim

The first look features the Ryde Jacket, a vintage inspired leather aviator jacket, in a rich oak brown. The buckle fastening at the hemline is quite a nice feature to a simple silhouette. When paired with the Lowry Shirt in the Chambray Blue, the colour combination is a delight. This denim shirt is an essential piece in the capsule for layering. This look is finished off with the Harpton Denim Jean.  A black raw stretch denim with articulated knees and a side zip pocket allows you to secure personal belongings with ease to reach.

Beckham by Belstaff Look 2: Moore Bomber, Fornham T-Shirt, Harpton Denim, Eastley Bandana

Beckham by Belstaff Look 2: Moore Bomber, Fornham T-Shirt, Harpton Denim, Eastley Bandana

Inspired by the aviator jackets of the 1950s, the Moore Bomber features in the second look. It is a boxy-fitting style, with a detachable faux-shearling collar and knitted cuffs. Combined with the Fornham t-shirt, Harpton Denim Jean and the Eastley bandana it is a fantastic look. Beckham loves classic riding accessories and chose an iconic paisley print for this cotton bandana, which is in Dark Navy.

Beckham by Belstaff Look 3: Stannard Jacket, Fornham T-Shirt, Harpton Denim

Beckham by Belstaff Look 3: Stannard Jacket, Fornham T-Shirt, Harpton Denim

Look three features the Stannard Jacket, making a welcome return with this capsule, offering colour options in black and racing green. While black is often favoured by most, the racing green is a fantastic colour, and one of my favourite pieces overall in the entire collection. The contrast between the soft cotton of the Fornham t-shirt and the strength of the Stannard Jacket is quite wonderful. I’m a big fan of a simple t-shirt. The hand feel of the cotton is beautiful, so very soft against the skin. Add in the trusty Harpton Denim Jean and you have look three covered.

Beckham by Belstaff Look 4: Marshfield Jacket, Buckler T-Shirt, Harpton Denim, Gipson Gloves, Eastley Bandana

Beckham by Belstaff Look 4: Marshfield Jacket, Buckler T-Shirt, Harpton Denim, Gipson Gloves, Eastley Bandana

The fourth look is led by the Marshfield Jacket, in an 8oz waxed cotton with a distressed effect. The colour is Antique Beige which shows up the effect quite well. This jacket was inspired by the legendary International Six Day Trial, an off-road racing even often referred to as the ‘Olympics of motorcycling’. Seven external pockets and a buckle belt at the waist make this jacket a real standout. Under the jacket there is the Buckler T-Shirt in Heritage Jersey in a Mid Grey Marle (Melange). Worn with the Harpton Denim, Eastley Banada and the Gipson Gloves. These leather gloves are beautiful and in a burnt brown. I love these gloves! Suede panels can be found on the palms and a simple tie fastener on the wrist.

Beckham by Belstaff Look 5: Stockfield Blouson, Fornham T-Shirt, Harpton Denim, Gipson Gloves

The final look sees the new Stockfield Blouson, a black raw stretch denim jacket with black leather sleeves, worn with the Fornham T-Shirt, Harpton Denim and Gipson Gloves.

I loved the second capsule of Beckham by Belstaff and recommend you take a look on the website if you are not close by a store to visit. If you are in London pay a visit to Belstaff House, I highly recommend it. To go to the official Belstaff website, click on image below.

Country Road Winter 2015

Dreaming of Winter in Summer

The beauty with The Man Has Style is that I am talking to a global audience, so I tend to flick between summer and winter in my coverage. Currently, on the super hot days where I live, sometimes day after day of blue skies and blasting sun makes me crave winter. Of course, winter in Australia is not the same as the colder months elsewhere in the world, but it does get cold, so thankfully we do get to indulge in dressing to meet the cooler climate. When I was designing menswear, I loved, no, really loved the winter styles. I always felt there was so much that could be done and I became more fascinated than ever with different textures and fabrics. With a few cooler days recently (far from cold though), I have thrown myself into what’s around the Australia market for this coming season.

Country Road Winter 2015

I was looking through the Country Road Autumn Winter 2015 collection and admiring the way they had pulled together an adventuress spirit with their signature classic styling. A little sports-luxe, a touch of military and some beautiful tones that give way to a feeling of exploration. Beautiful soft knits, which I adore, go so well with both the suiting and more casual chino track pants. The pieces all work well together and I do love to see quilted puffer and bomber jackets, especially in the mix with leather high-top sneakers. Of course, my fondness for suiting is met with satisfaction also. They have collaborated with one of Italy’s oldest and most renowned mills, Marzotto, for their suiting. The silhouettes are shown in modern and the ever lasting classic styles.

Country Road Winter 2015

Sophie Holt, the Managing Director at Country Road had a little Q&A around the menswear collection for this season, which while not exclusive to The Man Has Style, I wanted to share with you regardless, as it gives a good insight into the collection.

Explain how you have been inspired by the concept of Adventure for the AW15 menswear collection.

Sophie: We’ve recognised a renewed desire for authentic experiences – for adventure, for rediscovering the outdoors. We wanted the range to reflect that.

How you you balanced this influence so that men can easily incorporate the trend into their wardrobe?

Sophie: The collection is modern and versatile. A lot of key pieces are practical and utilitarian: think puffers, quilted herringbone and waffle tees that are easy to layer.

country road menswear winter 2015

Country Road Winter 2015

What are the other trends prevalent for AW15?

Sophie: Sportswear is influencing how we dress on a day-to-day basis. That performance-inspired aesthetic is also informing our designs in a clean, luxe way.

What are the key colours and textures for men?

Sophie: Cool grey is key for men, sitting along new neutrals of soft tan and sulphur. This season, men should look to army green, especially alongside a woodland colour palette. Details are important too: but bold patterning is taking a backseat to subtle textures and knits.

Country Road Winter 2015

Country Road Winter 2015

What are the essential building blocks that every man needs in his wardrobe?

Sophie: Slim-fit denim and chinos are versatile essentials. I think every man should have at least three suits: Navy, charcoal and then something a little more opinionated, like a check. Merino or lambswool knitwear makes for easy layering and a smart navy blazer is a must for throw-on-and-go style.

What is the best-selling piece of menswear for Country Road?

Sophie: Our slim stretch chino is such a great piece: effortlessly modern, and a perfect way to add a sophisticated neutral or subtle level of colour to an outfit.

What is one item that every man should wear this AW?

Sophie: The bomber jacket is a key silhouette this season. Clean joggers are a nice nod to the sports luxe trend.

Is there a star accessory for the season that every man should own?

Sophie: A pair of crisp white trainers. They’re versatile enough to wear with chinos or suiting.
